New England cannabis for pets discussion

Cannabis for pets could be big in Rhode Island

Rhode Island may have just started recreational cannabis sales in December of 2022 but a new conversation is already starting around cannabis and pets. The topic of cannabis for pets is picking up in New England with Representatives in the Rhode Island legislature filing a bill to create more dialogue about whether veterinarians should be able to prescribe THC and other cannabinoids to animals. According to reporting from NBC News 10 WJAR, one of the bill’s sponsors, Rep. Charlene Lima is not a fan of the idea, questioning the benefits and claiming that studies show THC can be fatal for some animals. The bill will create a discussion to help lawmakers understanding the nuances of this issue. The topic of cannabis for pets has also been discussed in New Hampshire’s Therapeutic Cannabis Medical Oversight Board and the Research Subcommittee of the Massachusetts Cannabis Advisory Board.
