Merrimac Voters Approve Recreational Cannabis

Merrimac votes yes to bring recreational marijuana to town

Voters at the Merrimac town meeting supported the Town Meeting warrant to allow adult-use cannabis establishments within the town. Previous attempts to allow recreational marijuana in 2017 and 2019 were defeated. At this months town meeting residents overwhelmingly supported the proposal. This comes as the town looks for additional ways to bring in more money. beWell Organic Medicine is only medical dispensary in town. If allowed to open for adult-use sales the business could potentially bring in tens of thousands in tax revenue for Merrimac.

Police Chief Eric Shears said the Merrimac Police Department has had no issues with beWell. According to Shears their business is highly regulated and run well. Even if the store receives approval to add recreational sales Police Chief Shears says that having an officer onsite will likely be unnecessary. beWell will need to approach the town to receive all the necessary permits and ultimately a license from the Cannabis Control Commission before opening for adults aged 21 years and older.
