Cannabis Advisory Board research subcommittee meets

Cannabis research subcommittee holds first official meeting

The Research Subcommittee of the Massachusetts Cannabis Advisory board came together this week to hold their first meeting. Dr. Marion McNabb, appointed to the Cannabis Advisory Board by Massachusetts Treasurer Deb Goldberg in 2021, was named Chair of the subcommittee earlier this year. Dr. McNabb started the meeting with introductions from members of the subcommittee as well as information about a timeline of upcoming regulatory changes at the Cannabis Control Commission.

Commissioner Roy made a presentation updating members of the subcommittee on the legislative action being taken at the statehouse and its impact on cannabis research. The Subcommittee also heard a presentation from veteran and medical cannabis advocate Steven Mandile who wants to eliminate barriers and expand access to medical marijuana for veterans in Massachusetts. Dr. McNabb also included data from research that has been conducted with veterans and medical cannabis in Massachusetts.

The subcommittee plans to meet on a monthly basis with 2 hour long meetings. The subcommittee voted to ask Dr. Staci Gruber and Cannabis Advisory Board member Frank Shaw to speak at the next meeting. Dr. Gruber can provide the Subcommittee with a medical understanding of the endocannabinoid system and how terpenes and other cannabinoids can factor into therapeutic cannabis use. Frank Shaw can speak on the topic of vertical integration in medical cannabis licensing and how removing barriers can expand access to medical marijuana for patients.
