RMI Compassion Center may have won one of the 5 medical marijuana dispensary licenses from the State of Rhode Island in a recent lottery. Unfortunately, the company did not win a special permit from the City of Woonsocket. The company was denied a special permit in part because the proposed facility has within close proximity to an indoor trampoline playground within the same shopping plaza.
RMI is one of three state licensed medical dispensaries currently without local approval. State rules require licensees to receive local approval within 9 months of the lottery. The Director of Cannabis Business Regulation says they are ready to look at alternative solutions to ensure that an each area has an operational medical dispensary. The state passed legislation in 2019 to expand the number of medical marijuana dispensaries. The progress of opening these additional dispensaries is slowed down from local decisions like the one from Woonsocket.
